Democracy is pivotal to workers rights and everyone should be able to participate in elections if they choose to.
As your union, we’re using this state election as a chance to fight for better health and community services and better working conditions for workers.
We’re disappointed to hear that some of our members have been targeted for being involved in political activities this election – and frankly it’s unacceptable because it breaches your rights and the state’s own anti-discrimination laws.
HACSU’s Committee of Management, which is a group of elected workers like you who make decisions about our union, have said that enough is enough and voted to endorse industrial action for the duration of the election. This is to protect workers like you and make sure that you can have your voice heard and participate in the election process should you choose to.
We know politics is not everyone’s game and that our members have diverse views about this election, but we’ll always fight to make sure you can have your say no matter who you support.
HACSU State Service workers are now authorised to participate in political activity (and protected retrospectively) from Wednesday 14 February by:
1. Identifying themselves as state service employees whether by wearing uniform or otherwise in media
2. Expressing their own political view without restriction
3. Expressing their view about the service in which they work for political purposes
4. Participating in political activity reasonably by way of not effecting their obligations to the community which they serve
This action will remain in place until the election closes at 6pm on Saturday 23 March or until such time as the Premier withdraws his discriminatory direction to State Service workers.
